By their hands he was granted life on this world
But from their hands he was ripped and taken away
They wept with joy by his cradle
But now they've wept with sorrow by his coffin too
The elders stand at the burial ground
Where the seed they first planted was laid down
The cracks of mourning start to show
Elders above, son below
By their hands he was lowered down into the ground
And with their hands they buried one of their own
They cried in agony by his coffin
And now they've cried by his graveside too
They could not foresee all of this pain
What they would do to take his place
Fall to their knees, heads to the sky. arms open wide
'Was it not our time?'
'No!'
'The pain forever burning!'
'Oh please take me instead, not him!'
'Why?'
Gone; he has walked to the other side
Forever; he has walked through the fire
We never wanted to leave your side
Gone forever never ever to return

A truly stellar death/doom album with heavy doses of black metal. Tracks like Isolation, Child of Light, and Broken Hymns deliver the sorrowful and icy tone of this album, elevated by the stirring cello compositions of Raphael Weinroth-Browne. The album delivers a deeply satisfying crescendo in Becoming Intangible before stirring the soul once again with Epilogue. Matt Richardson

The first 30 seconds of "Revenge by Fire" convinced me to get the whole album! It is a face-melting blend of speed and black metal, reminiscent of Hellripper! KVAEN is a Swedish solo project much like Hellripper but many known guest musicians helped J. Björnfot in his endeavor. Altogether it is really a solid debut album, I loved the melodies and the pace changes in the second half too, ending with a "calm" instrumental one. Well-done!! sachavonkarl74
Crushing blackened doom from this German band that counterbalances blinding fury with moments of surprising, melancholy melody. Bandcamp New & Notable Jul 8, 2023
An outstanding slab of atmospheric black metal, “Sisyphus” cannily blends texture and terror for a gripping final product. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 7, 2021
The eight tracks on the latest from German black metal band pummel and hiss, working occasional atmospheric moments into the din. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 12, 2022

Jordan Vauvert
